Instead of my usual run around East Carolina University and the surrounding area, I drove to Winterville for the evening run. Graduation was last night at 7 pm, so traffic would have been too much to deal with in the city. Winterville is a pretty quiet place where I knew I could run with minimal traffic. Once I got past the first mile and a half I was able to run in the road with nothing but the light of the stars. This is my favorite time to run because the run starts with a sunset and then stars and planets slowly make their way into my path. Mercury is low in the sky and I watched it for a while as I ran. I continued on and a few miles later I saw Jupiter begin to rise. At one point the sky lit up a bit as fireworks were being set off at the stadium at ECU for the end of graduation. I shouted, "Go Pirates!!!" as I continued to run. Then I ran past fields with deer who popped their heads up when they heard me approaching. I felt one with nature!
Sometimes I ran, sometimes I walked. Hinson Lake will be a run/walk combination, and I imagine the last half will be more walking than running. I love nothing more than the quiet of the night, the twinkle of the stars, the bold light from the planets, the ability to put one foot in front of the other, and the mental strength to not give up.
