I arrived at Master Swim early so that I could get a head start on the warm up. I will admit I am not a strong swimmer so I figured if I showed up early I would have a few laps in before everyone else arrived. Even a 15 minute head start put me a lap or two behind the rest of the group when the warmup and drills (1100 yards) were over. Oh well, at least I started early!
And then the main set arrived. This is the real meat of the workout and tonight was just as hard as any other night. Maybe even harder. I immediately began to regret having Bojangles for dinner before arriving. Note to self: eat light or feel heavy! My major mistake was swimming my 100 time trial without a proper rest after the drills. My foot immediately cramped at at the point the only thing to do is to try to maintain form. Which, by the way is next to impossible. My time was too embarrassing to mention here so lets just say it took longer than the average Joe. The next thing on the list was to complete four sets of 200 yards on 2 1/2 time trial. Meaning that you take your 100 time, double it and add half and that is how long you have to complete each set. That time includes your rest, by the way. So the faster you swim, the more break you get between sets. I was "lucky" to have 30 seconds between my first and second set and I was GASSED! I had multiple foot cramps and other things go wrong and my whole body felt like it was on fire. Tears filled my eyes when I learned I had 30 seconds to breath before having to go again. The second set was much slower because I decided that I didn't care what the time was or if I went over the limit. My plan was just to finish the distance without sinking to the bottom of the pool. My second set was slower but that didn't matter. I think the coach could tell I was a mess and he told me to take a break, swim a cool down lap and then join the rest of the group in a kick set.
In the end my workout was about 2500 yards which I will take any day of the week. 1600 is about a mile so I am happy with this! I am hoping next weeks workout goes better. I am happy with my distance, I am just hoping I dont chock back quite so much water next time!
Total Distance: 2500 yards
Total Time: 1:46:52
Today's Mantra: Slow down and BREATHE!
